Most Reverend John Mackey DD

Biography

• Born in Ireland in 1918
• Educated in Auckland by the Sisters of Mercy and the Sisters of St Joseph
• Attended Sacred Heart College in Auckland
• Studied for priesthood at Holy Cross College, Mosgiel. Ordained in 1941
• Bishop of Auckland from 1974 until 1984
• Previously Professor of Church History at New Zealand's national seminary, Holy Cross College in Mosgiel and lecturer in Church History at the University of Otago.
• With a doctorate in education and master's degree in history, he spent the earlier years of his priesthood as Director of Education in the Auckland Diocese.
• Author of three books:

  The Making of a State System

  Looking at Ourselves (The Church moving towards the third millennium)
