The National Centre for Religious Studies produces programmes and resources for Religious Education in New Zealand. NCRS is an agency of the New Zealand Catholic Bishops Conference Commission for the Church and is part of the Catholic Institute of Aotearoa New Zealand.
NCRS is responsible for the production of adult courses such as Walk by Faith and teacher formation programmes including Understanding Sexuality. It also produces religious education and catechetical programmes at early childhood, primary and secondary levels for schools and parishes.
The work of the centre is guided by Sharing The Gospel Today: The Cathechetical Directory for Aotearoa New Zealand.
NCRS promotes courses designed to increase understanding and promote a mature faith including Walk by Faith. Many of these courses, diplomas and degrees are made available through universities and dioceses to supplement those produced by NCRS itself.
Catholic schools offer young people the means to acquire the knowledge they need in order to find a place in society. At the same time they look to impart a solid Christian formation.
Faith-learning at parish level is based around preparing people to receive the sacraments, for example the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, Baptism or Confirmation. NCRS produces two programmes to support parish catechists in the more general catechesis of school age children.
Religious Education for pre-school children aims to lead them to a loving, personal relationship with God. NCRS provides a number of resources to support familiy-whanau, parishes and early childhood services.
