The Curriculum is truly Catholic in its presentation of elements of a living Tradition, appropriate for children in primary schools. It uses the best current educational practice, and integrates with the other essential learning areas of the curriculum.

Religious Education Curriculum Statement for Catholic Primary Schools

Introduction

The curriculum helps children to develop an understanding about how Catholics celebrate, live and pray in ways that are relevant to the new millennium.

It was developed by teachers for teachers and seeks to enhance the collaborative relationship between the Home, the School and the Parish as they work together to educate their children in faith.

The Curriculum Structure

The curriculum has six Learning Strands for each of the eight years of primary school: - God, Jesus, Holy Spirit, Church, Sacrament, Communion of Saints.

There are also three Learning Modules for each year level: - Liturgical Year, Prayer and Sacramental Celebrations, Myself and Others.

Components

The attractive materials which make up the total package consist of:

  • The Curriculum Statement.
  • One Teacher’s book for each Learning Strand and each Learning Module for each year (a total of 72 books).
  • A Music and Prayer Resource (CD and A3 Clearfile of words) for each Learning Strand year level.

  • A Picture Resource - 15 A2 size colour scenes from Scripture which is also available in digital form.
  • A Photograph Resource – 14 A2 size colour photographs illustrating the celebration of Sacraments.
  • One Family-Whanau Book – a resource to assist parents/caregivers.
  • The digital RE Resource which provides activity sheets for use with the programme and a series of digital lessons for each strand at each level.
