Purpose of the Catechetical Directory
The Catechetical Directory provides principles and guidelines for catechesis and religious education at all levels in the Catholic Church in Aotearoa New Zealand.
In response to the invitation in the General Directory for Catechesis (1997), the New Zealand Catholic Bishops’ Conference asked its agency, the National Centre for Religious Studies (NCRS) to prepare a national directory.
The fruit of extensive consultation, Sharing the Gospel Today applies the principles of the General Directory for Catechesis to our local context. It aims to assist catechists in presenting the Good News faithfully in ways appropriate to our cultures, and to the evolving situation in this land.
The Bishops wish to commend Sharing the Gospel Today to all involved in catechesis, but in particular to those in positions of leadership in dioceses, parishes, chaplaincies and educational institutions. In so doing, the Bishops also wish to thank sincerely all those who are involved in the great enterprise of catechesis whether professionally or as volunteers. As John Paul II reminded us in Catechesis in Our Time: Catechesi Tradendae #5, the definitive aim of catechesis is to put people not only in touch but also in communion with Jesus Christ.
