New Zealand particpants will be sending posts from the Synod on Marriage and the Family in Rome this month. Here is a post from Cardinal John Dew.
One of the most sensible interventions I heard today was along these lines:
The family is the first place where the dance of grace is discovered. We have been speaking in this Synod as though the family is all about problems, and we did so last year too. What we need to do is to look at the family in the light of faith, see all the good things and celebrate them. The family is actually what people treasure the most – even though there are obviously difficulties and tensions within a family. It is the family that gives meaning to all that they do. If we spend all our time focusing on family problems we will miss the joy if what families are all about. We need to learn from families and be taught by them.
Cardinal John Dew is Archbishop of Wellington and President of the New Zealand Catholic Bishops Conference.
